“Hey! You’re that guy who works in Data Science and uses R instead of Python, right? Sorry, I forgot your name.”
“Haha. Weird way to remember me.”
“It was a high ‘entropy’ thing for me. People don’t generally use R in the industry, so I remembered you like that.”
This was one of the conversations I had with an acquaintance last year. I never categorized something like this, but I realized the high ‘entropy’ of what this guy was talking about was quite real. It is a characteristic of something that is not very common. A bit unusual.
Maybe Elton John’s overly flamboyant dressing is one such high entropy thing. You remember them vividly. They are quite unusual.
I stayed in Gurgaon for some time. Gurgaon gyms were full of unusual characters. That needs a separate post. But one such character with high entropy I found quite interesting and motivating. In my regular gym, there used to be a gentleman, over 70, who came to the gym regularly. He wasn’t someone with a high muscular build, and there would be a trainer with him all the time who would guide him on how and what to do. So, it was quite clear that he was a newbie. But he used to be there regularly. I remember he even started doing dumbbell lateral raises with 5 kg dumbbells, which was quite impressive.
I turned 28 today (4th August). And if I am lucky enough to live past 70 (or even 60), I would want to be like that Grandpa!
I started going to the gym regularly in January 2022. So far, I have liked the experience. People seldom talk about how beneficial working out is for mental health. Both running and strength training have been game-changers for me. I would like to continue doing it as long as I can.
In general, in life, I have this newfound respect for people who ‘take care of themselves’ or manage to do something for themselves even after having a corporate life. You have six-pack abs and you’re a model? That’s okay! Do you have a 9-5 corporate job and still maintain yourself? Damn! That’s interesting.
It is not always restricted to working out, though. It can be a hobby that you pursue or something creative that you do when you’re not working. Everything deserves respect. Keeping some time aside for them is not easy. It is quite challenging. But it is rewarding and deserves respect.
Other than that, one thing I seek to be better at is networking and keeping in touch with old friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. Maybe I need to come up with some system or mechanism to do that. There have been instances when I had tried doing that and it wasn’t very fruitful. So that was discouraging. But I guess those incidents can be discarded.
